Introduction to The TECHtrepreneur

An Accidental Calling

Sometimes, the wrong door leads to the right life

Russ never planned to work in the HVAC trade.

In fact, if things had gone according to his plan, he would have become an electrician.

Fresh out of high school, Russ enrolled in the local trade school with every intention of joining the electrical industry. He liked working with his hands, wanted a stable career, and figured electrical work sounded respectable enough.

But on the first day of class, everything changed.

The Electrical program had been canceled for the semester due to poor enrollment numbers. The administrator behind the counter shrugged and told him there was one other option still open across the hall: HVAC.

Not familiar with the term, Russ asked “what’s HVAC?”

Russ didn’t know what HVAC stood for, but he knew he needed a path forward.

The administrator frowned and said “heating, ventilating, and air conditioning”.

So, with equal parts of disappointment and uncertainty, he picked up his backpack, walked across the hallway, and stepped into a classroom that would unknowingly change the entire trajectory of his life.

At first, HVAC felt accidental and temporary - something to do until he could get his electrical certificate.

But, over time, something unexpected happened.

Russ discovered he really loved solving heating and cooling problems.

He enjoyed the challenge of diagnosing systems. He appreciated the satisfaction of restoring comfort to families on the hottest days of summer and the coldest nights of winter. He loved that every day was different. And maybe most importantly, he loved the feeling that his work mattered to those families that he served.

What began as a backup plan slowly became a calling.

And over the next several years, that accidental decision across the hallway would lead Russ through crawlspaces, attics, rooftops, service trucks, late-night emergency calls, business ownership, leadership struggles, financial lessons, hard-earned victories, and eventually a life he never could have imagined as an uncertain 18-year-old standing in a trade school hallway.

All because one electrical class got canceled.

This is a story about how a great technician experienced an “entrepreneurial seizure” and grew into a great business owner.
